How Do I Know if My Roof has Been Damaged by Hail?
Spotting hail damage on your roof can be tricky, considering the wide variety of roofing materials and the way they resist and show the signs of impact. Clay tiles, wood shingles and shakes, slate, metal roofing etc. – they all have different levels of impact resistance, and damage on them will look different. Wood shingles and shakes can split when being struck by hail stones, slate and clay may present cracks or gouges, while on metal roofing there will be round dings and dents. On a metal roof, there is also easier to determine the size of the hail. Metal roofing is one of the easiest to spot for hail damage. If you have an asphalt roof, you might also discover shingle granules in the gutters or spread around the house.
Per knowledgeable Castle Rock roofing experts, after a hail storm, there are other roof accessories that must be carefully inspected as well. Check the flashing, metal valleys and roof vents; they are made from soft metal, which makes hail damage easy to spot on them.
If you make the roof inspection by yourself, make sure you use the necessary safety equipment. Set up a ladder and start with the top of the roof, examining the ridge cap, then the shingles. Look for signs of damage, missing pieces or areas where the substrate has been exposed.
